Expanding on the idea of the “Man Box” (Green, Mark, 2013) (Edwards & Jones, 2009), Edwards, K.E. (2012), the class will take a look at some of the pervasive and often very subtle beliefs in our culture regarding male sexuality and expression. Our clients cling to these beliefs because they believe them to be true and these beliefs are supported by the culture around them. How do these beliefs impact the sexuality of men, male identified people, and those they partner with? How have we as professionals absorbed some of these beliefs ourselves? In class we will look at these thought patterns, how to recognize them in our clients, and pathways to replacing the beliefs with helpful information and behavior.

Learning Objectives

  1. identify and label 5 common cultural beliefs which negatively affect sexual expression and function in men.
  2. compare and contrast these beliefs with more authentic information about masculinity.
  3. recognize at least one teaching techniques and/or therapeutic intervention to use in practice.
